Our Story

Nick began dancing at the Castle School of Dancing at the age of 19. A talented schoolboy footballer Nick was looking forward to a very different career and only went along to the dance class to appease his Mum, a talented and life long dancer herself. In her words "He took to it like a duck to water". Nick had a different view and will tell you he was "absolutely rubbish" for the first few years. Something must have appealed because Nick has not stopped dancing in over 40 years! Having trained in Ballroom and Latin at the Castle School, Nick completed his medals and went on to enjoy a competition career spanning several years and three talented dance partners. Finally, and in pursuit of a new dance direction, Nick returned to his old friend and mentor Harry at The Castle School of Dancing, where his dance career had first begun. Harry advised him to study for his Ballroom teaching qualifications saying he had the personality and characteristics to inspire students. When Nick passed them all first time Harry employed him on the spot. Founded in 1922 The Castle School of Dancing has a long and proud history of excellent Ballroom and Latin dance instruction. A history Nick has been proud to continue in his role as principal instructor. In addition to his established teaching routine at The Castle Nick also finds time to deliver private tuition and host dance events in the Torbay and Exeter area.

Nick is married to Amanda. Finding each other late in life, at a social dance (naturally!), they now enjoy running the Castle School together and have great plans for future ballroom initiatives. Once a dancer, always a dancer!

Our Values

We believe the long and proud tradition of ballroom dancing should be available to everyone, whether you come with a dance partner, or not. To that end our lessons are designed so that everyone can participate, and we keep our prices as low as possible.

We make it our business to welcome and include everyone who wants to dance. Dancing is not just good for a healthy body and mind, its good for the soul too. Everyone should do it!

We work hard to create a dance community where all our dancers feel able to learn, to practise, and to socialise among like minded friends. After all, the purpose of dancing is to have fun, and make friends!

We support and encourage other professionals in the ballroom fraternity, believing that by helping others to thrive, we thrive ourselves, helping to keep the ballroom tradition alive for generations to come.
